Gifts for Kindle Lovers (and Audiobook Lovers) I’d Actually Give

The best gifts for Kindle lovers are the boring ones they’ll use every day. If they don’t own a Paperwhite, that’s the gift. If they do, get a strap and a stand for how they actually hold it, and if they listen too, get earbuds with noise cancelling. On the digital side, an Audible book or a Kindle book is the safe bet. Skip page turners, reading pillows and bookish merch. I read on a Paperwhite and listen on Audible, and this is the stuff I use.

Most gift guides for readers are a list of mugs. Mugs with book quotes, mugs shaped like books, a sweatshirt that says “one more chapter.” The reader in your life does not need another mug.

What they need is whatever makes the reading they already do a little easier. For me that’s a Kindle at bedtime and on the sidelines at my kids’ practices, and Audible on everything else: runs, the gym, the car, folding laundry. I’ve written about both halves before, in my Audible review and my Whispersync for Voice review. These are the gifts for Kindle lovers and audiobook lovers I’d actually give, because they’re the things I actually use.

Gifts for Kindle Lovers: The Short List

If you only have a minute, here’s the whole guide. Everything below links to the exact thing I use or recommend.

The Best Gift for a Kindle Lover Is a Paperwhite

I’ve owned a basic Kindle and a Paperwhite. If someone asked me which one to give, it’s the Paperwhite, and it isn’t close. Everything I care about is better:

  • It’s faster, and the battery lasts longer between charges.
  • The screen is bigger and sharper, which you notice every single page.
  • The warm light is easier on your eyes reading in bed at night.
  • It’s waterproof, so a splash isn’t the end of it.

There’s one wrinkle this year. Amazon refreshed the Paperwhite for 2026, and it’s thinner and lighter with the power button moved. The screen didn’t change: it’s still a 7 inch, 300 ppi, glare free display with the warm light, and the prices match the 2024 model, according to TechRadar’s comparison. Mine is the 2024 Paperwhite, and it’s still on sale. If you want the new one, the 2026 Paperwhite Signature Edition adds 32GB, an aluminum body and an auto adjusting front light for $249.99, per 9to5Toys. I haven’t used the 2026 version. Both have the same screen, so compare prices the day you shop.

Kindle Accessories I Actually Use

This is the part where most guides give you twenty things. I use three. That’s the honest number, and it’s why I trust them.

A plain case

My Paperwhite lives in Amazon’s own water safe Paperwhite cover. It’s made for the 2024 model, so check the fit if you’re buying the 2026 one. Nothing fancy, and that’s the point.

A strap for one handed reading

The Strapsicle is a strap on the back of the Kindle that your hand slides under. Reading in bed, I can hold the Kindle with one hand without my fingers cramping. It also stops drops, which matters more than you’d think when kids are grabbing at everything you hold.

A stand for when your hands are busy

The Korecase adjustable stand is the one nobody thinks to buy. I prop the Kindle up while I eat lunch, next to my keyboard on my desk, and on the nightstand. Three spots, one stand.

Gifts for Audiobook Lovers: Headphones for How They Listen

Headphones for audiobook lovers cut out on a green cutting mat: orange Shokz OpenRun Pro 2, AirPods Pro 2 in their case and black Powerbeats Pro 2

Here’s the thing most gift guides for audiobook lovers miss: one pair of headphones doesn’t cover everything. I listen to Audible on my iPhone, and I use three different pairs depending on what I’m doing.

  • Outside: Shokz OpenRun Pro 2. They sit in front of your ears instead of in them, so I can hear cars on outdoor runs and walking the dog.
  • Everyday: AirPods Pro 2. Folding laundry, washing dishes, on a plane. These are the ones in my pocket.
  • Treadmill and gym: Powerbeats Pro 2. They stay in my ears, and the noise cancelling blocks out the gym.

If you’re only buying one pair, get noise cancelling. It’s a better listening experience, full stop. A narrator competing with a dishwasher is a bad time. The one exception is anyone who listens outside near traffic. That’s what the Shokz are for.

If the person you’re buying for is a runner, I wrote about why audiobooks make easy miles bearable in my Audible review.

Can You Listen to Audiobooks on a Kindle?

Yes, with a catch. Audible works on the Kindle 10th generation or later, the Kindle Scribe and the Kindle Colorsoft. But current Kindles have no speaker and no headphone jack, so you need Bluetooth headphones or a speaker, and only Audible titles play, per this ebookfriendly breakdown. That makes Bluetooth earbuds a smart pairing gift with a new Kindle.

I’ll be honest, though. I don’t listen on my Kindle. I listen on my phone and read on the Kindle, and Read & Listen (the feature that used to be called Whispersync for Voice) keeps them on the same page. It needs a Kindle from 2022 or newer, and you have to own both the Kindle book and the audiobook.

How to Gift an Audible Book, a Membership, a Kindle Book or Kindle Unlimited

Digital gifts are the easiest thing to give a reader and the easiest thing to get wrong. I’ve given and received both Audible and Kindle book gifts, and they worked fine. The gotchas are all in the fine print, so here it is.

Gifting an Audible audiobook

You have to do it on Audible’s website or a mobile browser, not the Audible app. You can pay with a credit or a card, and the person getting it doesn’t need an Audible membership. You can’t gift credits themselves. If they already own the book, Audible refunds you.

Gifting an Audible membership

This is the one with surprises. Gift memberships come in 1, 3, 6 or 12 months and don’t auto renew, so nobody gets an unexpected bill in March. But if the person is already a member, the gift doesn’t extend their plan. They get all the credits at once, and those credits expire 12 months after they’re issued. For someone who already has Audible, gifting a specific audiobook is cleaner.

Gifting a Kindle book

Use the “Buy for others” option on the Kindle book’s page and enter their email. One catch: Kindle books can only be redeemed by people in your same country, so it won’t work for the cousin overseas. If they never redeem it, you can send it to someone else or get a refund.

Gifting Kindle Unlimited

Amazon sells Kindle Unlimited as a gift. I use KU, and my take is only sometimes. It’s great for someone who reads a lot of what’s on it. A lot of big releases aren’t, so if you don’t know what they read, a specific book is the safer gift.

The Paying Twice Mistake

Here’s one that took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out. When I read the Dungeon Crawler Carl series, I bought every audiobook with Audible credits and every Kindle book at full price. Full price, twice, for the same story.

If you own the Kindle book, Amazon often offers the Audible narration as a cheap add on right on that page. Audible calls it Add Narration. So if you’re gifting someone a Kindle book, tell them to look for the narration price before they spend a credit. That one tip might be worth more than the gift. I covered it in detail in the Whispersync review.

Books I’d Actually Give

If you want to gift an actual book, these are the three I’d hand someone, each in the format I think works best.

What I’d Skip

A gift guide that never tells you what to skip is just a catalog. Here’s what I wouldn’t buy a reader:

  • Automatic page turners. The clip on remotes that turn the page for you. I don’t find them useful.
  • Reading pillows. Too big and too bulky.
  • Bookish junk. Mugs, generic sweatshirts, pens and stickers. Most reader gift guides are full of it, and I’d skip every bit.
  • Headphones without noise cancelling. If they’re going to listen at home or travel, pay for the ANC.
  • Both formats at full price. If you’re buying the Kindle book and the audiobook, check for the narration add on first.

Who This List Isn’t For

This is a guide for people who read on Kindle and listen on Audible, because that’s me. If the reader you’re shopping for only reads paper books, most of this misses. Get them the book they keep talking about. And if they get their audiobooks from the library or another app, an Audible membership might sit unused. Ask what they listen on before you buy.

Do This Before You Buy

Find out how they read before you pick anything. Kindle or paper, Audible or something else, in bed or on the go. Then pick the one gift that makes that easier. One good strap beats five bookish mugs. Take what’s useful. Leave the rest.
